What makes a successful film producer?

In a 40-year career, David Elfick has shepherded Newsfront (1978) and Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) to the screen. He also produced the landmark surfing films Morning of the Earth (1972) and Crystal Voyager (1973).

Paul Byrnes talks extensively with him about his career and what it takes to survive and thrive as a film producer in Australia.

'If you have a strong producer he can make you see what you are doing. With Rabbit-Proof Fence, we all agreed that the start did not work and the end did not work. I needed to go out and raise some more money so that we could reshoot … It’s about having someone questioning what you are doing, but not feeling threatened by them.’
