Mr Connolly’s career

Bob Connolly’s career as a documentary filmmaker has taken him from the wilds of the Franklin River in Tasmania, via Chile and New Guinea, to the Sydney Opera House, the setting for his new film Mrs Carey’s Concert (2010). In our latest filmmaker interview with Ray Argall, Bob shares his approach to observational documentary:

'I think it’s the hardest form of documentary in all sorts of ways, to be uncontrolled about your capturing of material but at the same time to be governed by narrative requirements … To try to recognise the narrative developments of a situation over which you have no control and no knowledge about what’s going to happen. It’s a deeply exciting way of working.’

You can watch the interview with Bob here. The interview is accompanied by a stills gallery and a comprehensive screenography.

Mrs Carey’s Concert screens in cinemas nationally from 28 April.
