Prime-time PMs

We’ve just published a bunch of new film, television and audio titles about Prime Ministers and our timing couldn’t be better! Prime ministers are the topic du jour. Julia Gillard is Australia’s first female prime minister, Network Ten screened the Hawke telemovie and a federal election has been called.

If Hawke (2010) whetted your appetite, you can watch Max Gillies play Bob Hawke – in front of the real thing (see Gillies, clip 1). Compare William McInnes's portrayal of Curtin (2007) with documentary footage of the wartime PM in Hellfire Jack: The John Curtin Story (1985). Listen to Curtin’s most famous speech in its entirety, Curtin Speech: Japan Enters Second World War (1941).

Another famous prime ministerial speech is Kerr’s Cur (1975), delivered by Gough Whitlam on the steps of Parliament House, after events portrayed in the classic ’80s mini-series The Dismissal (1983). Life at the Top: A Week with Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser (1977) features the man who replaced him.

See titles tagged Prime Ministers for a wealth of other material, including election ads, political cartoons, newsreels, famous speeches, home movies and documentary footage.
