a discussion about: First on film
in the group: First on film
Somebody suggested to me at a dinner last night that the Australian boxer Young Griffo was the first Australian to be put on film, around 1895 in the USA. Started me thinking – was he right? Anyone got any ideas? My informant says the film of Griffo almost certainly is lost, so I guess we might be looking for the first Australian on film that is extant. And perhaps the first Australians to be filmed in Australia would be those done by Sestier and Barnett, with a Lumiere camera, in late September 1896, filming around the Sydney harbour foreshores. Graham Shirley and Brian Adams in Australian Cinema the First 80 Years say their film, Passengers Alighting from Ferry 'Brighton’ at Manly, was the most successful of their shorts, but was it the first they shot?
Hi Pablo, I don’t know about first recorded but it would be fun to find out how many people can identify a relative on australianscreen.
There is the grandson of the Melbourne Cup jockey from Australasian Gazette – 1924 Melbourne Cup
And the son of Dorothy Fricke – Efftee Film Productions Congratulates Miss Dorothy Fricke
And I’d love to know what happened to young Wally in Albion, Douglas: Wally’s Fifth Birthday Party c.1921.
