Clip description
Evan (Samuel Johnson) is hours away from leaving for New York and his friends and flatmates gather at their usual haunt for going away drinks. Amidst the excitement, it looks like Alex (Claudia Karvan) and Evan may not get a chance to talk before he goes. Gabrielle (Sibylla Budd) confronts her ex-husband Jason (Damian de Montemas) with questions about their past.
Curator’s notes
A point of interest here is the choreography, the focus shifting from character to character as they mingle and move around the bar. This allows the tension between Alex and Evan to be prolonged – each exchange they have is interrupted. It also allows the scene to touch base with more than one story-line. This is a repeated technique in the series, using a gathering at a party, bar, or club to bring characters together and advance multiple story-lines in a fluid single scene. As with many drama series, Secret Life uses the local bar as one of its key locations.
