A garden party is organised by Sandra’s bridesmaids and old friends in the week before the wedding. It’s quite a society event. Sandra is very aware of the responsibilities attached to her new life, but will she be able to cope with her new role? As soon as the honeymoon’s over, she and her husband will return to their new home to supervise several weeks of shearing with very early starts and huge and hectic days. Sandra will return to find herself the mistress of a grand mansion in a family home with a long and illustrious tradition.
Curator’s notes
This particular program in the Chequerboard series typifies its philosophy. A rigorous research process is the basis of each program’s success. The filmmakers talked extensively with social science experts before moving into the community to select people who were representative of some social phenomenon. Not just interesting people per se, but people who represented some trend or movement in society.
Amongst the names of the researchers were those who went on to become some of the illustrious names of Australia’s documentary tradition, such as Tristram Miall, Aviva Ziegler, Bob Ellis, Stephen Ramsey, David Roberts and Gillie Coote.
