Clip description

Fergus (Sean Ohlendorf) and his father Don McPhail (Brett Swain) arrive in Melbourne on the bus, and it’s an embarrassing experience for Fergus. Their arrival at their new home in front of Sophie (Megan Harrington) and Angela (Heli Simpson), two cool local girls who just happen to be passing at the wrong time, is even more embarrassing.

Curator’s notes

The hilarious but all-too-brief glimpse of Fergus trying to cover his father’s wet crotch is a hot contender for the Monty Python ‘Ministry of Silly Walks’. Brett Swain makes a great daggy dad, and Sean Ohlendorf’s Fergus is a painfully self-aware and dorky but appealing teenage boy who never seems to get it right. This, along with the maxi taxi and Fergus’s mishap with the wheelchair, sets the comic tone of the series. The scene also introduces Sophie and Angela, the two key female characters, and establishes the uneven relationship between them and the inept Fergus, who is forever on the backfoot.
