Clip description

Cybergirl (Ania Stepien) and Jackson (Craig Horner) get to know each other as Cybergirl demonstrates her superpowers by influencing the electrical equipment in the bus.

Curator’s notes

This sequence demonstrates how Cybergirl combines a teenage character with superpowers with a more down-to-earth treatment of the relationship between a replicant and a human teenager (Jackson). As the series progresses this central relationship develops with Cybergirl trying to fit in while posing as Jackson’s cousin Ashley.

Cybergirl reflects executive producer Jonathan Shiff’s desire in the early 2000s to create a female superhero so that children, especially girls, could see themselves in the media as ‘proactive, intelligent and strong, whilst still being emotionally sensitive’. In the media kit Shiff explains his intention that, in addition to being an adventure series, Cybergirl should also be a character-driven story about an outsider ‘trying to learn about being human and therefore discovering laughter and joy as well as sadness’.
