The con and the shrink

Original classification rating: MA. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Prison psychologist Louisa Correlli (Deborra-Lee Furness) meets convicted felon Kevin Jones (Hugh Jackman) for the first time and is concerned by his apparent inability to perform simple tasks. The damage seems to have been done by an unreported beating that Jones took from unnamed police or prison officers prior to his arrival at Blackstream.

Curator’s notes

We get a good look at the skills of both leading actors in this clip. Jones impresses both Correlli and the audience with his vulnerability, playing the part of a brain-damaged individual truthfully, as a con man who is by necessity a consummate actor, would. Whether or not he is actually brain damaged, it again mocks the very system of so-called protective services.

Corelli, on the other hand, maintains a professional reserve and degree of scepticism, but conveys sufficient concern to suggest that she is taken in by his performance. The tight camera close-ups enhance and foreshadow the burgeoning mutual attraction that is continued through the series. It is a delicate scene that sets up the core of the series very well.
