Clip description

After a meeting with their boss, Inspector Timms (John Lee), couple Amanda King (Lynda Stoner) and Detective ‘JJ’ Jeffrey Johnson (Peter Adams) argue. Timms wants Amanda to do a dangerous undercover job and JJ is not happy about it. He thinks it’s too dangerous – she is angry that he doubts her abilities as a cop.

Curator’s notes

Here one of Cop Shop’s core concerns comes to the surface. The changing status of women in both work and relationships often causes tension between Cop Shop’s male and female characters. Adams’s closing line – ‘Oink oink’ – seems to refer to his character being a self-aware ‘male chauvinist pig’. Knowing it doesn’t stop him, however – and the show prefers to let the characters have the argument than to take a side.

The sequence carries some classic soap stylings – for instance, intense stares, weighty pauses and semi-melodramatic dialogue in which characters explain everything they are feeling.
