Clip description
New customer Helen (Penne Hackforth-Jones) has come to Chandon Pictures for a DVD slide show featuring her beloved dog Champion Charles Wink Monte Carlo. After Nick (Darren Gilshenan) notices her affection for the dog is so great that some of the photos have lipstick on them, Lucy (Rebecca Massey) sees an opportunity to up-sell. She calls in Tom Chandon (Rob Carlton) to help convince Helen to order a full video tribute.
Curator’s notes
Tom Chandon’s offsiders share some of his comic qualities. Nick pushes Tom’s naivety up another notch. Lucy demonstrates naivety, insensitivity and a focus on money. The self-deluding grandeur of Tom’s overblown discussion about character archetypes taps into one of his key comic traits and a running joke in the series in which he applies highbrow film language to animal tributes, wedding videos and video wills.
Their enthusiastic, dog-obsessed client is played beautifully by Hackforth-Jones, whose presence on Australian television spans four decades. Her character appears in two further episodes of Chandon Pictures and is granted a small character arc, progressing beyond the tragic obsessive we see in this episode.
