Catalyst – Wollemi Pine (2005)

Synopsis

The discovery of a tree from the Jurassic period in the National Park in the Blue Mountains of NSW in 1994, was like finding a family of dinosaurs alive and well. Scientists are returning to this remote location to find out more about the trees, their cell structure and how they might be protected.

Curator’s notes

We’re immediately gripped with a sense of intrigue as the blindfolded reporter flies high above the Blue Mountains to a secret gorge deep inside the Wollemi National Park. The scientists have a dilemma. Should another grove of these unique pines be started in a different area of the forest, or should nature be allowed to take its course.

The story was part of a magazine-style program in the Catalyst series and presents a thoroughly provocative dilemma with no easy answers.
