Australian Story – Absolute Beginner (2006)

Synopsis

Just over eight years ago, Marg Ward lost her husband when he died suddenly of a heart attack. Marg was 56. After two terrible years, she began again with a new life. She went to university to build on her earlier training as a nurse, and then joined Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) in some of the most difficult and war-torn areas of Africa.

Curator’s notes

Australian Story has once again found a truly uplifting story of a life turned around after tragedy. Marg is an inspiration to everyone who’s ever wanted to do something special with their life but has become sidetracked with family or other commitments and then suddenly finds themselves over fifty. In the style of Australian Story, Marg tells her story in her own words with additional comments from her daughters and her friends and colleagues.

The program is introduced by Professor Ian Frazer, Australian of the Year for 2006, and the immunologist who developed the cervical cancer (human papillomavirus) vaccine in 2005.
