Clip description
An RTA timber bridge maintenance worker explains the characteristics of historic timber truss bridges in New South Wales, including the special quality that timber bridges have over their concrete or steel counterparts. An example is the 1882 Monkerai Bridge, an old Public Works Department bridge. A montage of historical photographs of timber truss bridges is accompanied by a voice-over narration explaining special maintenance requirements and the need for a supply of hardwood timber.
Curator’s notes
All the RTA workers in the film appreciate the significance of the structures they are working on and the care needed to preserve them. The clip links the history of timber bridge construction to the importance of heritage conservation by having a bridge worker describe the unique feel and design of the timber bridges. The connection between history and heritage is also implied in the film’s title, Maintaining the Links.
