Clip description

This clip shows various leisure activities in the beaches, rivers and bays of the Geelong area. At Eastern Beach swimming pool hundreds enjoy the waters. Only a few miles from the city, at some of the ‘best surfing beaches in Australia’ – Torquay, Anglesea, Ocean Grove and Port Lonsdale – women come down to the beach and put their bathing caps on, while others take their long boards out into the surf. The Royal Geelong Yacht Club at Corio Bay, and the Barwon River featuring the local rowing club in training, are also featured.

Curator’s notes

The emphasis here on recreation and, later in the film, education provide a spectrum of attractions that Geelong has to offer. Shell had its own distribution and exhibition network across the country to show its films to audiences and The City of Geelong may have been used to promote the city as both a growing tourist destination and also a place which can provide support and employment in the areas of primary industry.
