This newsreel segement from approximately 1924 shows the farewell and departure of the retired Chief Justice Sir William Cullen and Lady Cullen in Sydney for an overseas trip. Lady Cullen is farewelled by a party of Girl Guides who give her the Girl Guide salute while judges of the Supreme Court bid Sir William a pleasant journey.

Curator’s notes

This silent newsreel captures the excitement of international travel in the 1920s. The ocean liner is covered in streamers and its departure is a major event. Being silent, intertitles have been used to explain what is on screen and to link chronological segments together to tell the story.
