Grendel Grendel Grendel (1980)

play
clip The ‘hero’ Beowulf

Original classification rating: G. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

The hero Beowulf (voiced by Arthur Dignam) and his men arrive at the King’s mead hall.

Curator’s notes

The traditional notion of the hero is subverted in this clip where, despite his muscular appearance, Beowulf is portrayed as a self-serving, lecherous and conceited fop. Unferth (voiced by Ric Stone), unlike the foolish king, remains unimpressed by Beowulf’s celebrity status and resentfully describes him as a ‘lunatic’ and his band of men as a horde of ‘sub-humans’.
