Clip description

The trial of Lindy and Michael Chamberlain (Meryl Streep and Sam Neill) begins at a court in Darwin. Lindy’s pregnancy is the source of much media attention. Judge Muirhead (Charles Tingwell) instructs the jury not to be swayed by rumour and publicity.

Curator’s notes

Evil Angels shames the Australian public and media for their frequently appalling behaviour during the Azaria Chamberlain case. Sad but true, the man who says 'they ought to burn the bitch’ and the woman who says Lindy has a face 'that’d turn milk sour’ accurately represent many Australians who revelled in the sensational details and viciously condemned the Chamberlains before the trial had begun. The TV-show discussion on Lindy’s pregnancy and the journalists running a lottery on her baby’s star sign vividly depict how some sections of the Australian media used the Chamberlains and the trial for cruel sport.
