Lindy Chamberlain (Meryl Streep) is charged with the murder of baby daughter Azaria. Her husband, Pastor Michael Chamberlain (Sam Neill), is charged as an accessory. Surrounded by TV helicopters, Michael tells Lindy he doubts God’s will.
Curator’s notes
A strong theme in Evil Angels is the religious faith of Michael and Lindy Chamberlain. Michael Chamberlain has accepted his daughter’s death as an act of God, but his conviction is tested when he and Lindy are arrested for murder. The TV-news helicopters surround the couple like vultures preying for the kill. Filming the action from an aerial perspective above the helicopters gives an omnipotent sense to this scene – as if Michael and Lindy are being punished by a cruel god.
