Clip description

Harry (John Lynch) causes Kate (Jacqueline McKenzie) to miss her bus. She panics and tells him she must find a television, so they run to a TV shop window in the city. Kate explains that she gets her messages from Astral, her guardian angel, by watching the clues on Wheel of Fortune, a game show. One of the clues gives Kate a sign that she is meant to be with Harry.

Curator’s notes

The early scenes in the film are very unpredictable, as in this sequence, but full of unforced humour. Jacqueline McKenzie gives Kate a very girlish quality, almost like a teenager with her mercurial temper and immediacy, but we already know that she has been through a lot. Just before this scene she tells Harry that she was taken away from her family when young because her father raped her. She and Harry then compare scars on their wrists. The scene also introduces the recurring metaphor of angels – the guardian angel seems to answer Harry’s question of whether they will be together with a song title, ‘You are my special angel’. This of course refers to the way Harry feels about Kate already.
