Hypsi: the Forest Gardener (1998)

Synopsis

The documentary follows zoologist Dr Andrew Dennis as he studies the life cycle of the smallest kangaroo, the hypsi (musky rat-kangaroo), in Far North Queensland’s rainforest, and discovers the secrets of its survival.

Curator’s notes

A well-made natural history documentary that enlightens and delights the viewer. Writer–director Ruth Berry has successfully combined the beauty of the rainforests, the enthusiasm of the scientist and the charm of the hypsi, with an appealing guitar soundtrack. Ruth Berry’s credits include, Thriller Science, Dinosaurs on Ice, Terrible Lizards of Oz, Tropic Gothic and Rangers. Ruth Berry is also a natural history illustrator.

Hypsi: the Forest Gardener won The Natural Prize, Festival de l’Oiseau 2001, and Best of Category (Independent) IWFF Missoula, USA 1999.
