Bastards from the Bush, A Journey with Bob Ellis and Les Murray (1998)

Synopsis

Author and screenwriter Bob Ellis and poet Les Murray go on a journey visiting significant places from their past. They attended Sydney University together and remain staunch friends after 39 years. They go to Newcastle NSW, Sydney, Taree, Canberra, Yass and Bondi. The locations trigger conversations, reminiscences, meetings with old friends and poetry readings.

Curator’s notes

Two cameras are used to capture both subjects as they exchange revelations and intimacies. The technique captures reactions well. Les Murray has won multiple awards for his poetry and is considered by many to be one of Australia’s greatest contemporary poets. His work has been published in ten languages. Bob Ellis is credited with writing this documentary. His other credits include Outrun the Night, Nostradamus Kid, Warm Nights on a Slow Moving Train and The True Believers. Director Geoff Burton’s credits include, Aftershocks, Fine Body of Gentlemen, Australians at War and Actor & President.
