David Gulpilil: Cultural Trailblazer

David Gulpilil has starred in some of Australia’s most iconic feature films, including Storm Boy (1976), Crocodile Dundee (1985), Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) and Australia (2008). His latest film in a 40-year career, Satellite Boy (2012), was released in June.

Liz McNiven profiles Gulpilil and the impact his work has had on the portrayal of Indigenous characters and culture on Australian screens:

'As a traditional dancer, Gulpilil adapted the precision, grace and agility of this art form into his acting. Over the course of his career, he dignified and enriched the representation of Aboriginality beyond the understanding of any non-Indigenous scriptwriter or director.’
