Clip description

Gary (Emil Minty) is asked to read out his exemplary essay to the class and the rest of boys groan theatrically. Later Gary is put down by the other boys when he plays badly at cricket. On his way home all the boys are lying in wait for him and he is pushed off his bike by Sean Finnegan (Adam Goodrich) to the cheers of the others.

This is a painful scene that captures how Gary is perceived by his classmates in a rough and tough Catholic boys school. Bullying Gary Doyle is the school sport, he is clearly an outsider and doesn’t fit in at all. The rest of the boys are robust, tough, loud and active, unlike Gary with his glasses, small size, intelligence and thirst for learning. While clearly a resilient boy, Gary has much to deal with in his daily life.
