clip Major prize round

Original classification rating: G. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

The final, major prize round starts with host John Burgess recapping the prizes on offer to new carry-over champion Mark. Mark fails to solve the final word puzzle. He goes home prize-less but will return for tomorrow’s 2000th show, and the chance to win a Holden Commodore car.

Curator’s notes

This clip demonstrates the winning mix of successful game show elements that Wheel of Fortune maintained despite the many changes to set, music, format, prizes and hosts over 25 years. The show offered entertainment with a relaxed pace and a simple format with straightforward games to solve. With puzzles, personalities and prizes, this enduring game show format provided a chance for everyday Australians to win big prizes (including the iconic Holden Commodore) and for a home audience to relax, identify with the contestants, enjoy the banter between the hosts and play along at home.
