Clip description

At police headquarters, Inspector Malcolm Thorne (Gary Day) asks Detective Steve Hayden (Peter Mochrie) where Tessa is. When Steve acts defensive, Thorne pressures him to keep the case on track. At the zoo, employee Sally Hicks (Cathy Campbell) gives a TV news interview about the murdered man, Trevor Parkin. An eclectic mix of people connected with the case see Sally on the news.

Variations of this conversation between Malcolm and Steve about Tessa occur elsewhere in this series and it reiterates character dynamics that are at the core of the show.

The TV interview is an interesting connecting device that allows the viewer to revisit characters connected with the case so far and potentially form theories about the killer. Building an image of a community of suspects is common in the murder mystery genre. Sally’s voice provides continuity across compressed time and space – linking characters in different locations and bridging time from the working day to after-work drinks.

As with many drama series, the bar provides a focal point for interaction between the main characters and an opportunity for their different personalities to come into play.
