‘It’s a constant struggle’

Original classification rating: PG. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

A group of women that includes Jackie Kelly, a Federal Parliamentarian and a Junior Minister in the Howard Liberal Government, talk about how to deal with their children’s acquisitiveness. Jackie Kelly recalls growing up in a family of six children, while a single mother at home talks about the strains of getting by on her own with two young children.

Curator’s notes

It’s hard to imagine junior Minister Jackie Kelly having much in common these days with the only one of the group who is a single mother at home looking after eighteen-month-old and eight-year-old children. Jackie Kelly recalls her childhood with wry amusement as the group discusses how to deal with bringing up children in our consumer culture.

Rebecca le Tourneau keeps the discussion moving from topic to topic. In an attempt to widen the restrictions of a studio interview, the program is injected with occasional segments presented by AJ Rochester, comedian and writer, who talks to people in the community about parenting.
