clip ‘Of Middle Eastern appearance’

Clip description

After the shooting of a police officer, the call goes out to look for suspects ‘of Middle Eastern appearance’ and police target the Arab community. At the office, Zane Malik (Don Hany) clashes with his superiors Patricia Wright (Susie Porter) and Ray Crowley (William McInnes) over the team’s approach. Malik and his partner Sonny Koa (Aaron Fa’aoso) take a different tack and go to Lakemba Mosque to visit the Shiekh Al’ Alwani (Ali Sadiq).

Curator’s notes

This scene shows two styles of policing. Crowley takes an old-school, adversarial approach, intensified in this case by his hostile feelings towards Muslims and Arabs. Malik prefers to work with the community and in this case it helps that he is a member of the community being investigated.

The frenetic camera and fast-paced editing as the police carry out searches here is reminiscent of crime series Wildside (1997–99) which many of East West 101’s crew worked on, including producers Steve Knapman and Kris Wyld, director Peter Andrikidis and director of photography Joe Pickering.
