Clip description

The Doug Anthony All Stars (Tim Ferguson, Richard Fidler and Paul McDermott) are filling out the Shitsu Tonka census. They come to a section labelled ‘Describe your life’.

Curator’s notes

Character dynamics between the Doug Anthony All Stars make up part of the group’s act and here they give over-the-top commentary on their personas. Paul, usually an aggressive character, is also prone to melodramatic outbursts, as seen here.

The narrative uses a combination of dubious cause and effect and stream-of-consciousness logic to provide a series of prompts for comic set pieces. The group’s crash landing results in their needing to fill in the census form. Each section of the census prompts a different comic scenario. Here, a census question prompts Paul to spiral into a mood that will then trigger a series of new events, opening up further opportunities for the group’s particular brand of surreal comedy.
