Unmarried, pregnant and alone education content clip 1

Original classification rating: M. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

After more than 30 years, a woman recalls the most terrifying moment of her life as if it were yesterday. It was the 1960s and she was pregnant in a country town. Too afraid to tell her family, she fled interstate and had the baby alone. A pillow was placed in front of her face so that she never saw the son who was taken from her and put up for adoption.

Curator’s notes

The filmmakers very effectively present a truly harrowing tale told by a woman who has clearly been traumatised by this event all her life. Even though she later married and had other children, she never forgot this terrible moment in her young life when she was all alone and had to give her baby up for adoption. The shock of the footage of the Beatles on the balcony is profound – it was not the ’50s, it was the 'hip’ sixties. This is very effective filmmaking.

This is a searing story, well told. Again, it’s Compass, the flagship program of the ABC’s Religion and Ethics Unit, leading the way on another difficult moral issue that remains contentious.
