This 10-minute film, seen here in full, showcases the School Medical Service provided by the NSW Department of Public Health for primary and high school students.

Curator’s notes

The Happy Years highlights the work of doctors and specialists who ensure the state’s students are in good health. A primary school boy in need of speech therapy and a high school girl with behavioural problems have their problems diagnosed by the service’s doctors as examples of how the service works. Since this film was made, the primary responsibility for the health of schoolchildren has shifted from the schools to the parents.

The film is narrated by Kevin Golsby, an actor known principally for his voice work. He narrated newsreels in the 1960s and ’70s (see Australian Movie Magazine No 7201, 1971), played villains on television in Homicide (1964–76) and Division 4 (1969–75) and performed small roles in features, most recently The Final Winter (2007).
