Clip description

Against a series of scenic shots of the city and its bustling streets, a voice-over introduces the 90,000 strong seaport city of Geelong on the shores of Corio Bay. As the voice-over explains the reasons for the city’s prosperity, images show the wool industry. Wool is sorted, bailed, packed, and transported through Geelong’s ‘first-class road and rail connections’ throughout the state. Geelong’s location places it as a ‘trading centre’ and ‘natural outlet’ for the produce of the surrounding countryside.

One of the fastest growing and prosperous cities in Australia at the time, Geelong was built on the back of primary industry – wool and wheat – and later developed secondary and tertiary industries. In this section, the emphasis on industry is highlighted as one of Geelong’s strongest assets.
