Clip description

You can view the animated short film Winging It here in its entirety. A young man (voiced by David Brown), far from home, writes to his family in Australia. The desert of Jordan reminds him of his grandfather who fought in a similar place in the Middle East during the Second World War. Suddenly, the present confronts the young man with a challenge – a Bedouin approaches him with an automatic rifle. Childhood memories of a shooting gallery come to his rescue, as the young man hears his father’s voice (Max Bannah) recalling ‘the old man’s’ advice on shooting, and he makes good the challenge, by ‘winging it’.

Curator’s notes

Winging It was inspired by real events experienced by Joe Bannah, the filmmaker’s son. The film uses the visual device of flying letters and postcards, enabling us to fly across the continents, and between past and present. The connection between three generations, across vast expanses of time and space, is made strong and clear in the film. By the end, the double meaning of the film’s title becomes apparent. The flying letters morphing into birds are ‘winging it’, as is the young man when he tries his hand at marksmanship.
