Clip description

The Farey family enjoy a picnic on a river bank in the 1930s. They drink tea and throw stones into the river. Leslie Francis Farey captures this simple family picture on 16mm film, providing a social record for others to view.

This clip shows a family picnic in Australia in the 1930s. The family remain candid and spontaneous despite the odd play to the camera.

They make some tea for the camera and throw stones into the river. A woman even combs her hair in front of a small mirror on the riverbank.

This picnic was probably a short stop on the return leg of the family’s road trip from Victoria for the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
