Original classification rating: M. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Bojan (Kristof Kaczmarek) quits his remote job with the Hydro-Electric Commission to live with daughter Sonja (Rosie Flanagan) in Hobart. Bojan takes her to a dilapidated house he calls a ‘wog flat.’

Curator’s notes

Bojan is trying to win Sonja’s trust and accept his responsibilities as a father. He is acutely aware of his shortcomings but finds it difficult to say sorry properly. The tone of this sequence gradually shifts from darkness to one of cautious optimism when Bojan shows Sonja the house he wants them to live in. Like the relationship between father and daughter, the house is run-down but not beyond repair. Bojan proudly calls the dwelling a ‘wog flat’, a term used in Australia at the time to describe the basic accommodations of thousands of Europeans who migrated and worked on large projects such as the Tasmanian hydro-electric scheme.
