Clip description

Mia (Frances O’Connor) visits the head of film studies (Kym Gyngell) at her university and finds it’s not going to be as easy as she thought to change courses.

The scene provides comic entertainment value while advancing the plot significantly by placing a major obstacle in Mia’s path. Gyngell is experienced at comedy and hiring him for the small but important role of Mia’s head of department proved to be a wise decision. He’s pitch perfect here, switching through several contrasting moods and modes of address in the space of only three minutes. That his behaviour is variously rude, unctuous, insincere and unfair is of course the point. O’Connor is no less amusing in her reactions.
