Clip description

Michael Stacey (Ray Barrett) introduces himself and his milieu – the beautiful beach of Surfer’s Paradise on the Gold Coast and a town full of ugly buildings. He is a once drunken, now disgraced, former senior cop trying to write a book about police corruption. His landlady (Carole Skinner) wants the rent and his publisher is trying to cancel the book. His troubles have just begun.

The narration is pure Raymond Chandler, but more openly satirical – as in naming his dog Somare. Barrett establishes his character’s wit and charm very quickly. John Seale’s photography, emphasising the line between sand and land, between pure and not so pure, introduces a theme – how to live in the real world and protect what is good.
