Clip description

This clip describes the conflict over mining, environment, and religion in Kakadu National Park.

Curator’s notes

The Jawoyn peoples call Coronation Hill in Kakadu National Park ’sickness country’. The guardians of the site declared the safety of the world will be at stake if mining occurs on this sacred site. The environmentalists voice concerns that mining would destroy the integrity of the area.

A federal government inquiry places value on not only the importance of development but its impact on the environment and religion, and this is unprecedented in Australia at the time.
