clip 'It's a signal … we're receiving a signal'

Original classification rating: G. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

Nikki (Petra Jared) and Shane (Che Broadbent) play a trick on Mike (Zbych Trofimiuk). When the computer starts indicating signals from a different star, Mike is excited. He believes they are witnessing history. But when the radio signal is finally decoded, it is a picture of his idol Jimi Hendrix, and the message ‘Got you Mike!’.

Curator’s notes

The science story wraps up in this scene with the trick played on Mike, but it also prompts a moment of wondering what might a signal from an extraterrestrial communication look like, what might it say, and how might we interpret it. This is the strength of the Sky Trackers series, embedding interesting and thought provoking science into the context of the drama in an engaging way.
