After a dinner party with Diver Dan (David Wenham), Laura Gibson (Sigrid Thornton) realises she didn’t hit it off with his friends. The next day, she visits him at the boatshed to ask his advice on where she is going wrong and what it will take to be more accepted in Pearl Bay.
SeaChange often highlights Laura’s outsider status and contrasts her city ways with the eccentric country community in Pearl Bay. David Wenham’s enigmatic Diver Dan is both a source of wisdom and Laura’s main love interest in the first series, with the unresolved sexual tension between the pair strung out until its closing episodes. Wenham left after this series (the same year as his cinematic breakout in The Boys, 1998), with Shaun Micallef and William McInnes playing love interests in later seasons.
