A Big Country – Perkins Navy (1979)

Synopsis

Bruce Perkins owns a fleet of flat-bottomed barges that help the people of northern Australia to inhabit some of the least accessible areas of the top end.

Curator’s notes

The far-flung Aboriginal settlements and big mining centres of the top end all need Perkin’s navy to land the heavy machinery used to build the all-weather roads vital to this region.

This A Big Country features a man with a pioneering spirit, who is also a highly trained engineer. As Bruce Perkins says, you need someone for the top end, which is what Australians call the Northern Territory, who is prepared to get things done.
This program was made in the early days of A Big Country when the structure was still rather static. It would have been terrific, for example, to see Perkins crashing through or crashing, rather than simply talking about it.

This program was first broadcast on 20 September 1979.
