clip A 'stroke of evil genius'

Original classification rating: G. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

Elgar (Neri Marg Downey) flatters the evil Galiel (Michael Carmen) as she listens to his planning. As his crystal loses its power, he is rapidly weakening and must find the other three crystals as soon as possible. He decides to get the unfortunate Oceanians to find them for him. Galiel again ‘possesses’ the King to achieve this.

Curator’s notes

This melodramatic scene showcases two of the most interesting characters in the series, the deliciously sycophantic, self-serving Elgar, and the creepy, spider-like Galiel with the pulsating pink umbilical cord attached to the stolen crystal. They are delightfully funny and robustly evil villains. As seen with these characters, animation allows for the imaginative creation of such distinctive personalities through a combination of visual design with the personality and voice of the actor.

The Return of Ocean Girl series animation director Neil Salmon describes how each of these characters was animated directly from the actor’s voice recording of the script, using this to build up each personality. It took, depending on the complexity of the characters’ movements, approximately three to four weeks to animate each episode.
