Frankie (Claudia Karvan) and Tom (Brendan Cowell) talk on the lawn outside their house. After Tom’s recent trip to hospital to have his stomach pumped, Frankie is worried about him.

Curator’s notes

With his idea about the laws of probability, Cowell’s Tom makes a key point of this episode. It’s an idea that continues to be explored as the series evolves. Stephen Rae’s evocative score is effective here. It adds gravity and provides the audience with emotional cues, helping us understand that the content of this particular conversation has resonance beyond the moment. The rising crane shot to conclude also adds dramatic emphasis.

As well as acting, Cowell is part of the series’ writing team, a role he filled before being cast as Tom.
