Clip description

At Eventide – the government-run home for the aged and infirm – a Brisbane City Mission welfare officer pays a visit to those within the ground’s hospital wards. The nursing matron is shown while the voice-over narration highlights the importance of her role. Shots of Eventide’s extensive grounds – including streets, living quarters and gardens – conclude the clip.

Curator’s notes

Eventide was established in October 1946 and was built on what was originally the barracks of the RAAF Air Training School on reclaimed wetland bordering Bramble Bay. This clip shows the extent of the grounds and the layout of the facility, which resembles a township. The narrator refers to the residents as ‘inmates’. This term was not meant to imply that those within Eventide were criminals or prisoners, but rather reflects the terminology of the times.
