Clip description

Charlie Wilson (Guy Pearce) and his brother Arthur (Danny Huston) talk about the family members Arthur has not seen for some time. Charlie says that their younger brother Mike has met a girl. Arthur appears to doubt Charlie.

Curator’s notes

Both tense and tender, this scene highlights the terrible dilemma facing Charlie. He has reunited with the brother he must kill if he wishes to save his own life and that of younger brother Mike. The dramatic sunset and Arthur’s poetic talk of this being 'the end of things’ hints at the possibility of Arthur knowing the real reason Charlie has come looking for him. Charlie can sense this as he unconvincingly makes up a story about Mike meeting a girl. The moment when it seems Charlie will draw his gun on Arthur is a chilling premonition of the tragic events that must surely follow.
