Pete and Elly have been missing for two days, since the picnic. Clyde (John Wood) and Mara (Kate Fitzpatrick) talk about whether they have just run away. Clyde thinks that Mara’s desire to do the same is irresponsible. Mara decides to tell Clyde some home truths about his fear of intimacy.
Another unconventional but well-shot scene, in which Tom Cowan uses strong light and darkness to suggest the gulf that exists between the two characters. This is the longest dialogue scene in the film, and the first time that Mara has shown her strength and independence.
