The Kid Stakes (1927)

  1. A good comment by Paul Byrnes. Elements and incidents in the film refer directly to news, issues and everyday life of its times (someone should document all that). It should be added that the film's availability today is due to an extensive rescue operation by the Sydney University Film Group in 1953-54, long before the present Archive existed.

  3. Watch for developments in Sydney, under AFI sponsorship, perhaps other states also, commemorating the 1954 rescue.
Film will also be seen in Boston and Vancouver in this July 2014.
Viewed again recently, there is extraordinarily graceful mise-en-scene at least in the Woolloomooloo scenes (most of the film). One suspects a responsive talent in Arthur Higgins there.

  5. Credits are significant! In the film itself, a single panel gives credit to Tal Ordell as writer and director, but in the same size type to Arthur Higgins as cinematographer.
Perhaps the ASO format should allow for Cinematographers as Principal Credit?

  7. Watch this exciting sequence closely, to pick up how it was constructed from different photographic elements. In my guess, a nice technical job of assembly as well as cinematography by the esteemed Arthur Higgins. Quickness of the cutter deceives the eye!

You get the feeling that director and cameraman did enjoy working on the film, even each other's company. A moment in the sun away from the studio for each of them.
