clip Sam wakes up

Clip description

It is morning in the share house. Tim (Nique Needles) is having breakfast. Sam (Michael Hutchence) wakes up and stumbles outside. A stranger (Deanna Bond) is sitting on the doorstep.

Curator’s notes

The world of Dogs in Space is vividly established. A tracking shot follows Sam into the messy kitchen, through the living room past sleeping bodies and into the morning light. Precise production design and art direction capture the late 1970s punk-new wave scene in Melbourne, and probably most other western cities at the time. The sequence is authentic right down to having cult ‘60s show Thunderbirds (1965-66) playing on TV, just as it did at 6 am every Saturday morning in Australia for more than 20 years. Played by the astonishingly charismatic Michael Hutchence, Sam personifies the seductive and glamorously grungy milieu the stranger on the doorstep wants to become a part of.
