Raccolta D’Inverno, Winter’s Harvest (1979)

Synopsis

The documentary records the traditional Italian community event of slaughtering a pig, butchering it for the meat, making sausages and having a feast with dancing enjoyed by the whole group.

Curator’s notes

The film records an event in 1979 now outlawed by the government. The social value of the community occasion is lost to considerations of health. The filming is done truthfully without hiding the reality of the slaughter.

An esteemed independent documentary filmmaker, Brian McKenzie’s other credits include I’ll Be Home for Christmas (1984), The Last Day’s Work (1986), People Who Still Use Milk Bottles (1990), On the Waves of the Adriatic (1990), winner of the Grand Prix at Cinema du Reel in Paris, and Love’s Harvest (2007).
