Clip description

Rupert Kathner (Ben Mendelsohn) speaks with a film producer about his enthusiasm for the future of Australian film. Historical footage shows Americans at the movies, as interviewees explain how and why the Americans took over the Australian film industry in the ‘30s.

Curator’s notes

This clip offers a concise explanation of how the American studios came to dominate the Australian film industry and made it very difficult for Australian producers and directors to get any films made. Kathner’s dialogue is lifted from the book he wrote in 1945, Let’s Make a Movie. Morgan was able to find rarely seen historical film and still images of Hollywood agents coming to Australia looking like Mafia gangsters with their suits and big cigars.
